Integrate Fronterio with n8n: Govern AI Workflows at Runtime

n8n is the fastest-growing open-source workflow automation platform, and every serious n8n workflow is now touching AI. Here's how to wire Fronterio's governance and EU AI Act compliance directly into your n8n canvas using the stock MCP Client node — no custom code, no branded node required, three ready-to-import workflow templates.

Why n8n plus Fronterio

If you run a business with any AI moving through it in 2026, two truths are showing up at the same time. First: n8n has become the default ops-automation layer for anyone who outgrew Zapier's pricing and prefers open-source they can run themselves. The default pattern today is to bolt governance on with spreadsheets, screenshots, and quarterly compliance reviews. That's not defensible. The better pattern: the n8n workflow itself checks with the governance platform at runtime. Before the email sends, before the charge retries, before the credit decision posts, the workflow calls Fronterio's `validate_action` MCP tool. If the action is allowed, continue. If it requires human approval, branch to a reviewer. If it's blocked outright, log and escalate. Evidence of every step flows back to the Fronterio audit log automatically. That's what this guide gets you.

The MCP piece — no custom node required

Fronterio's MCP server is spec-compliant — protocol version `2024-11-05`, standard `initialize` / `tools/list` / `tools/call` / `resources/list` / `resources/read` — so it plugs into n8n with zero custom code. Two transport options work today, and you pick per workflow:

1. **HTTP Request node.** Works in every n8n version. POST a JSON-RPC envelope to `https://fronterio.com/api/mcp/sse`, get the result back, branch on it. Maximum portability — this is what the three downloadable templates below use. 2. **MCP Client node** (`@n8n/n8n-nodes-langchain.mcpClient`, shipped in n8n v1.45 in late 2025). First-class MCP discovery inside the canvas — the node auto-lists Fronterio's tools and resources, so you pick from a dropdown rather than typing a JSON-RPC envelope by hand. Use this if your n8n version has it.

Both transports hit the same endpoint, accept the same Bearer token, and return the same responses. Pick on your version and your preference — the templates are HTTP Request because they work everywhere; upgrading a single HTTP Request node to an MCP Client node is a two-minute edit.

What does that give you? Nine tools and seven resources exposed, scoped per API key:

- `list_approved_agents`, `get_agent_config`, `get_agent_guardrails`, `get_guardrails` (read agents) - `get_governance_policy`, `check_deployment_compliance`, `validate_action` (read governance) - `report_deployment_status`, `report_agent_activity`, `report_incident` (write telemetry)

You pick the scope when you generate the key. A read-only telemetry worker gets `read:agents` only. A production-grade guardrail workflow gets `read:governance` and `write:telemetry`. An everything-bagel internal platform gets `full`. The API key gates what each n8n workflow can do at the MCP layer, not at the app layer. Compromise one key, rotate it, move on. Every other workflow keeps running.

This matters commercially because it means you don't need a vendor-branded 'Fronterio node' to get started. If and when a maintained n8n node makes sense — typed inputs per operation, built-in credential management, first-class branding — we'll publish it to the community registry. Until then, either of the two transports above costs you nothing to try.

Three workflows that matter most

We ship three downloadable n8n workflow JSONs alongside this post. Each one takes under 10 minutes to wire up against a real Fronterio account and solves a concrete governance gap most organisations have today. The source files live at `fronterio.com/n8n-workflows/` as static downloads.

**Workflow 1 — Stripe charge guardrail.** Every failed-charge webhook from Stripe runs through Fronterio's `validate_action` tool before an AI retry agent fires. If the agent's configured guardrails say 'no automatic retries on customer-disputed charges', the workflow routes to a Slack approval channel instead of silently retrying. The financial risk of autonomous billing agents getting it wrong is high; the time cost of wiring this guardrail is five minutes.

**Workflow 2 — Slack `/incident` capture.** When a staff member types `/incident high Customer got a hallucinated refund answer`, the Slack slash-command hits n8n, parses the severity + title, and writes a structured `report_incident` call to Fronterio. That record lands in the governance dashboard, starts the Article 73 authority deadline clock if classified as serious, and attaches to the relevant agent. Real-world benefit: the path from 'something broke' to 'regulator-ready incident record' collapses from hours of manual typing into a one-line Slack command.

**Workflow 3 — CI deploy status.** The GitHub Actions (or GitLab CI, or Jenkins) pipeline that deploys an agent calls Fronterio's `check_deployment_compliance` before the deploy, then `report_deployment_status` after. The seven-check gate covers agent approval, EU risk classification, conformity assessment, human oversight plan, data residency, capability-within-guardrails, and transparency requirements. If any fail, the deploy is blocked and a Slack message tells the team which check. If all pass, the deploy lands and the governance dashboard reflects live runtime state. Governance becomes a CI stage, not a quarterly review.

What each workflow actually achieves

The three templates aren't just demos — each one addresses a named EU AI Act obligation in a way that's auditable without additional tooling.

The Stripe guardrail satisfies Article 14 (human oversight). A named human is in the loop for any action the agent's autonomy level doesn't cover. The n8n workflow captures the decision-maker's Slack identity, the timestamp, and the reason. When an inspector asks 'show me how you enforce human oversight on autonomous billing decisions', the answer is a workflow diagram plus an audit-log query. That's defensible.

The `/incident` capture satisfies Article 73 (serious incident reporting). The hardest part of Article 73 is the clock — you have 15 days from becoming aware of a serious incident (2 days for death or serious bodily harm) to notify the relevant national authority. The hard part is counting those days correctly when the incident was reported informally in Slack at 3am and nobody wrote it down. This workflow eliminates the ambiguity: the Slack message IS the incident record, timestamped, structured, and routed into Fronterio's deadline-tracking state machine. Fronterio knows which of the 27 EU member states' market surveillance authorities should be notified based on the organisation's headquarters country (seeded in migration 0066), computes the deadline, and warns assignees at t-13d, t-7d, t-48h, and at breach.

The CI deploy check satisfies Article 26(5) (operational monitoring) and Article 11 (technical documentation) at once. Every deploy becomes a logged event with compliance-check results baked in. 'We don't deploy agents that haven't passed the seven checks' becomes a provable runtime invariant, not a policy document.

Scopes, rate limits, and production hygiene

One API key per logical n8n workflow is the right granularity in production. Label them clearly: `n8n-stripe-guardrail-prod`, `n8n-slack-incident-prod`, `n8n-ci-deploy-prod`. When something breaks, you know exactly which key to rotate without taking every workflow offline.

Rate limits are generous but real. The MCP endpoint allows 100 tool calls per minute per key, 1,000 telemetry events per minute per key, 10 incident reports per minute per key, and 5 concurrent SSE connections per organisation. The Stripe guardrail workflow above runs well under all of those. If you hit the 100-calls-per-minute ceiling on `validate_action`, you've either wired a workflow loop incorrectly (fix it) or you genuinely need more than that (split the traffic across multiple keys, or contact Enterprise sales for elevated limits).

Keep the MCP endpoint in a single place in your n8n configuration (either an environment variable or a shared n8n credential). When Fronterio launches a dedicated branded n8n node, swapping the HTTP/MCP client for the branded node will be a one-change migration. Don't hardcode URLs in individual nodes.

When to graduate to a dedicated Fronterio n8n node

The stock MCP Client node works for every use case documented here. The rationale for a dedicated node is purely ergonomic — each MCP tool becomes a distinct n8n operation with typed input fields, first-class credential management, one-click credential setup, and Fronterio branding on the node palette. That's worth building if n8n becomes a major integration path for Fronterio customers, but the decision is demand-driven: we'll publish the maintained node to the n8n community registry when at least three paying customers are running workflows like the ones above in production.
